The Eiffel Tower, Paris

the eiffel tower 3On arrival at our Air Bnb apartment in Paris we decided that one of the first things we should do was check out the iconic structure that is the Eiffel Tower.

The day we landed was perfect weather wise, blue skies and warm. It was the perfect day to sit under a tree and let the world go by. And that is what we did, with an amazing view of the tower in front of us, and the fountains going off to the side.

It was pretty perfect really.

the eiffel tower 4Wandering around the grassy areas near the Eiffel Tower we decided that we should come back in the evening, with a picnic basket to see the flashy light display. Wine always makes picnics better but the large amount of signs detailing that wine was not to be consumed on the grass put us off a little as the thought of breaking the law in a country where you don’t speak the language would present a fairly undesirable situation.

the eiffel tower 2So just before dark we headed from our apartment, armed with sandwiches ready to watch the darkness fall and the lights begin.

We managed to find our own little patch of grass and get somewhat comfortable ready to people watch and relax a little in a picturesque romantic location. However we soon began to realise we were in fact the only people without wine. Damn!

Then a shady character appeared as if he had read my mind, offering to sell us some hot sparkling wine…he said he would even throw in some glasses! Needless to say there was no way I was buying wine from a stranger, so he left. Not one minute later another guy appeared offering the same deal. This continued for the entire time we sat there. Really just sucks the romance away.

the eiffel tower 5The light display was nothing overly impressive in itself however the atmosphere of being amongst so many different people from all around the world was a fantastic experience. We didn’t feel the need to climb it, or go to the top as we had many other opportunities for some fabulous perspectives of Paris. For me standing underneath coming to terms with its grandeur was enough.

I love Paris and one of my favourite memories is still just sitting under a tree on the grass on the Champ de Mars looking at the tower and the crowds of people from everywhere flocking to get a look.

Sally – lovely of you to join in. What a funny story. I thiught you were going to tell me that you sat on the grass but were shooed off. I know those Parisians hate people enjoying their parks! Next time you will come armed with wine. The Eiffel Tower is a place I am happy to revisit each time I return to Paris. It truly is an icon. Hope to see you back for ‘F’.
